For as long as I can remember, I have interacted with people with all sorts of challenges. One conclusion that I have drawn in most of the instances is that a lot of the problems we find ourselves in are a result of lack of knowledge. Most of the nightmares we face are actually a result of lack of knowledge. A month ago, I spent a night in Kariba town, just a few kilometres from the world’s largest manmade lake bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia. a young mana called Tinashe kept me company for a while. While we enjoyed our conversations and everything else, I was not comfortable with one thing: the many mosquitoes which were all over the place where we were. I noticed Tinashe did not appear moved by the mosquitoes. I asked him why the mosquitoes were not biting him. He told me he had applied some repellent lotion.
Tinashe knew something that I did not know. He knew that there were a lot of mosquitoes on that side of the lake. He also knew a lotion that could keep the mosquitoes at bay. I realised a lot of people around us also appeared unmoved by the mosquitoes. Tinashe told me they probably had also applied the lotion. Sitting there and clapping endlessly was certainly not going to help. So I asked him that we go around the town to look for the lotion. I now had knowledge that where we were,, there were mosquitoes. I also had acquired some knowledge that there is a lotion that if applied, mosquitoes would stay away bfrom you. With that kind of information, I was inspired to take some steps: to leave the place, and to look for the repellent lotion. I did just that.
I was humiliated by the mosquitoes because of lack of knowledge about their presence there, and also my lack of knowledge about the repellent lotion, let alone where to find it. I could easily have contacted malaria from the mosquito bite. All because of lack of knowledge.
With various social networks at our disposal, it has become much easier to share information, and possibly save many lives. Through my interaction with different people online, I have noticed that social networks provide good platform for inspiring specific social action.
Instead of spending the day chatting uncontrollably on your favourite social network, why not use it to share knowledge. Maybe person sitting next to you could be battling with mosquito bites and does not know where to find the repellent.
